The property developer Damac is building new luxury flats next to the Dubai Canal, each with their own car lifts.
The six-tower, 4 million square foot project, Aykon City, will be built on Sheikh Zayed Road.
In the 2012 US presidential election, Mitt Romney’s wealth raised eyebrows when it was disclosed that his $12 million beach house contained a car lift – an elevator that brings your car from your garage to the door of your house without the need for ramps.
Now, Damac, which displays the name of a different American presidential contender, is bringing the car-lift concept to Dubai.
The development will include an 80-floor hotel with hotel apartments, a 63-floor tower of hotel apartments, a 65-floor office tower and two 30-floor towers, each of which will be home to “ultra-luxury” flats – and each of which will have its own car lift – an elevator that brings your car from your garage to the door of your house without the need for ramps.
The hotel project will include a tourist attraction in which consenting adults walk around the perimeter of the roof of the 80 storey hotel building.
Construction will begin in the summer and should be complete by 2021. Damac will shortly begin to sell off-plan properties in the development, it said.
This is just the latest attempt to fuse the ultra-luxury market’s love of the automobile with expensive apartments. With glass car-parking bays inside the house, Damac’s Bugatti Villas are designed to allow residents to appreciate their expensive car purchases from any room in the house.
Damacs’s announcement comes as Dubai’s property market cools and high-end properties suffer. Luxury properties shed about 10 per cent of their value in 2015, according to real estate consultancy Asteco. Ultra-luxury developments have been hit by a strengthening dirham, which makes local property more expensive to foreign buyers, and the collapse in oil prices, which has slowed economic activity in Dubai.
Damac was caught in a media storm over its partnership with the Trump Organization following an anti-Muslim tirade by US presidential hopeful Donald Trump last year.
